Choose the whole bed, not only the mattress size
The space a bed occupies depends on the frame or base as well as the mattress. Ask for the overall width, length and headboard height of the model you like. Measure around bedroom doors, wardrobes, bedside furniture and radiators. Our bed measuring guide is a starting point, but the dimensions supplied for the actual item should determine the final fit.
Compare mattress comfort in person
Tell the store what you like or dislike about your existing mattress and which size you need. Compare the options on display and ask about the feel, construction and care instructions for each. Comfort is individual; a description or a firmness label is not a substitute for considering the particular mattress yourself.
Bring the headboard and finish together
Ask which headboards, fabrics and finishes are available for the selected bed. Check dimensions, fixing compatibility and any choices that affect the total size or price. Bring a room photograph or colour sample to help compare the display with your own furniture and flooring.
Allow for storage and movement
Leave useful access around the bed and to the rest of the room. Where a particular model includes storage, check its opening clearances and operation with the store. Do not assume storage or any other feature is included in every bed shown in the photographs.
Measure the delivery route too
Note door widths, stair turns, low ceilings and access to the bedroom. Ask about packaging, assembly and the arrangements included with your order.
